Grace Fourie takes the iconic District Six precinct in Cape Town and transforms it into a unique and artsy culinary experience in Greenside, Johannesburg. As soon as you step into District Six Eatery, the vibrant ambiance and authentic colourful décor immediately catches your attention and gives you sense of the Bo-Kaap, Cape Town. Everywhere you look in the restaurant there are pieces of décor that capture the culture of Cape Town, wall to wall and floor to ceiling. From her chalkboard menu to panama hats and bright jazz festival costumes, everything invites you in to stare a little and stay a while longer, just to experience all that District Six Eatery has to offer.
Fourie brings her Cape Malay style culinary skills to Greenside, Johannesburg which enlivens your culinary experience at District Six Eatery. She is always present as owner and chef at the restaurant, whether it’s a quiet run or a busy run with tables spilling into the street. Fourie offers authentic Cape Malay flavours on the menu namely Samoosas, Oxtail in Pumpkin, Lamb Curry, Bobotie, Smoorsnoek and Tomato Lamb Bredie.
The menu is varied, and caters for meat lovers and vegetarians a like. Fourie’s menu speaks to everyones inner health critic as well. A perfect example of this is her decision to exclude the use of oil in her cooking with the exception of the oil that is used to fry the Samoosas. Her dessert menu ranges from Malva, Lemon Fridge Tart, Malay Koeksisters, Pumpkin Fritters and not forgetting the item on her Dessert Menu that will leave you awe-struck – Fourie’s award winning Melktert. This hearty slice of Melktert, with its velvety texture and light phyllo crust will without a doubt leave you wanting more.

The overall customer experience is so warm and homely. Fourie adds to this with her welcoming disposition, which makes your decision to stay that much easier at District Six Eatery. Fourie mingles with her customers and shares a warm hug here and there. The overall experience is definitely one that is unique and unforgettable, it’s rare that you are able to say that you hugged the Owner and Head Chef all in one.
